Xavier Math Bowl

Some of our middle school students recently competed in the Xavier High School Math Bowl.  All students did well and enjoyed the day.

Special congratulations to Joseph who finished fourth in the individual sixth grade competition and Joseph, Ben, Christopher and Jacob, who finished in fourth place for the sixth grade team competition.

Here are some of the problems that our students solved.  How did you do?

Eighth Grade Algebra:  I’m thinking of a natural number.  If I square my number and divide by four, the quotient is 16.  What is my number?

Eighth Grade Math:  A rectangular wall is being covered with 4-inch by 4-inch square tiles.  How many tiles are needed to completely cover a wall that is 5 feet by 7 feet?

Seventh Grade Math:  Big Bang Theory‘s Sheldon Cooper often wears a t-shirt with the number 73 on it.  73 is his favorite number because 73 is the 21st prime number and 37 is the nth prime number.  What is n?

Sixth Grade Math:  12 dimes are initially lined up side by side.  Every third dime is then replaced by a nickel.  After this every second coin is replaced by a penny.  What is the final value of the money?
